The Interview: Your Final Voyage Into Media Jobs Land
Once you’ve got the interview you only halfway there. The recruiter has plucked you from the vast sea of applicants and you feel pretty special. You should, but don’t be smug about it. Media and advertising jobs have a huge list of people qualified to handle them plus a whole batch of newbies with fresh diplomas saying they are the next big thing. You’re CV got you here, now its show time.
In the advertising jobs world, people are expected to be upbeat and enthusiastic maybe even more than other industries. But too much makes you look nervous and jerky. Enthusiasm can also be low key and still remain highly effective. Can we call it being calmly excited? Research the company you’re interviewing for.
Your knowledge about their history won’t be half as impressive as a bit of news on something they are hot on now. Go to Google, type the name, then select news. Know about the job you want. If its much different from what you last did, some research is in order. Know you interviewers surname and use it to greet them.
If you show up late, and the underground hasn’t been bombed, you might as well just go back home. Getting there early is your goal. Media jobs deal with immediate things, be immediate! Do switch off your mobile, then check again to make sure you switched it off.
And if you should forget both times, then whatever you do don’t take the call. Switch it off then and apologize for making them not want to hire you. When its over thank them and ask when you can expect to her back. Now go down to the pub and have one to maintain that calmly excited feeling.
